Why I Love Literary Conferences…
Summer is prime time for book lovers! From readers to writers, there’s a literary conference for everyone—whatever your genre or reading taste.
Last year, I spoke at Thrillerfest in NYC and Bouchercon in Nashville, rubbing shoulders with legends like Dennis Lehane, Harlan Coben, R.L. Stine, Ruth Ware, Tess Gerritsen and signing books next to S.A. Cosby, one of President Obama's favourite authors. A total fangirl moment!
This year, I stayed closer to home. At Toronto’s Motive Festival, I read from The Divorce Party alongside fellow Crime Writers of Canada. In Calgary, I hit up the always-energizing When Words Collide, where I ran a workshop on crafting marketable novel ideas. Bonus: I got to hear powerful keynotes from Eden Robinson, Stephen Graham Jones, and Finnian Burnett.
And the best part? Unexpected run-ins! Like bumping into Jaima Fixsen (author of The Specimen, which I raved about in my last newsletter) in the presenter’s lounge. We bonded over historical suspense, and I learned all about her writing partnership as Audrey Blake with fellow writer Regina Sirois. Their books The Surgeon’s Daughter and The Girl in His Shadow just shot to the top of my TBR pile.
Conferences = community, craft, and a whole lot of bookish joy. I highly recommend.
